Raising the profile of children’s non-fiction books in the classroom!

Building STEAM, ocean & environmental literacy

As my 2023 conference season comes to a close, there is no better way to celebrate than with this fantastic Publishers Weekly article: Innovative Projects Gain STEAM in Children’s Publishing by Shannon Maughan (Nov 10, 2023). It so clearly encapsulates what I am trying to do as an author of children’s non-fiction books. I believe passionately in the power of children’s non-fiction books as learning tools in the classroom, as well as in other non-formal education settings. As someone whose passion for the ocean and nature stemmed from early exposure to books about science and nature, I know the impact those books had on me. And now as an educator and author, I have witnessed first-hand the tremendous value non-fiction books have in fostering interest in STEAM and making it more accessible, as well as in building ocean, climate and environmental literacy. I’ve watched so many a-ha moments during my readings and presentations as students hear the stories and start making connections.

If you are looking for ways to bring non-fiction books into your classroom, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am looking forward to more conferences in 2024, and more opportunities to raise the profile of children’s non-fiction books!
